Piper Selden  is a writer, artist, activist and self-proclaimed "worm wrestler."  She was born on March 17, 1968 --St. Patrick's Day.  Piper's life and travels have taken her around the globe, influencing both her artwork and writing.  Growing up along the West Coast of the United States, she has lived in Washington, Oregon, California, Arctic Alaska and now Hawaii.

Piper currently resides in Hilo, on the Big Island of Hawaii, with her two children, husband, and a crazy beagle named Roxie.   She is a proud member of HIWA, Hawaii Island Writers Association, and is working on a variety of environmental, art and writing projects. Her writing includes fiction, non fiction and poetry. Piper's work has been published in magazines, newspapers, small presses, and organizations nationwide.

Her story, "Crazy Rain," published by Wheatland Press in 2004 in a collection titled
Polyphony 4.  Piper is featured in the series with some of the most imaginative and inventive fiction writers of our day. "Crazy Rain" is based in part on her first hurricane experience in the Hawaiian Islands.

When not monitoring the weather channel or dodging lava flows, Piper enjoys playing in the dirt--gardening, tending her worm farm and leading community workshops on composting in Hawaii. Her company, Hawaii Rainbow Worms, sells native compost worms and affordable worm bins to island residents.

Piper is also involved with many community organizations and leads weekly self improvement workshops in Hilo.  In 1998, she successfully lost 95 pounds and has kept off the weight through balanced living, a "can do!" attitude and a wicked sense of humor.  Her classes are offered Wednesday and Saturday mornings in downtown Hilo.

Local culture keeps Piper busy. She gardens the lava beds in her backyard to practice humility and collects recipes for the perfect Mai Tai.  She is also pursuing a Master's degree in English.
